Skill Level: easy

Size: 3-6 months

Materials Used:

  • Size (4) Worsted Weight Yarn
  • Crochet hooks: Size F (3.75mm) *or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Darning needle
  • Measuring tape/ruler
  • Scissors

Gauge (using size I, 5.5 mm hook):

For this pattern I find it’s easiest to make the first 4 rounds of the pattern, then measure to determine the correct hook size needed. After Row 4 the diameter should equal 4 inches. (See Photo 1)

Abbreviations Used (American Terminology):

sl st = slip stitch

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

dc2tog = double crochet 2 together

If you are new at reading crochet patterns, here is a great tutorial by the Craft Yarn Council that I highly recommend.

Notes:

  1. When you see ( ), everything in the parentheses should be worked as a set. For example, (1sc, 1dc) 2X, means, “sc, dc, sc, dc”.
  2. When you see a number followed by a stitch, that stitch needs to be worked over that number of stitches. For example, “5sc” means 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches.
  3. JoinAt the end of each row join with a slip stitch to the first stitch of that row (NOT the beginning chain stitch) to complete the row.
  4. The number in parentheses at the end of each row indicates the total stitch count for that row when completed.
  5. The beginning chain(s) of each row DO NOT count as a stitch.

This pattern has 2 Styles:

  • Style #1 has a Wider 2 inch Brim. I like to make this version all in one solid color.
  • Style #2 has a more Narrow 1.5 inch Brim. I like to use a white or variegated yarn, with a coordinating solid color for the brim.

Hat – Size 3-6 Months:

Finished Size (with brim):

  • height – 6 inches
  • circumference – 14 inches

(Using the larger size hook.)

Rnd 1:  10dc in a Magic Ring. [OR, if you don’t want to use a magic ring, ch 3, work 10dc in first ch.] Join (see note #3). (10)

Rnd 2:  ch2, 2dc in each stitch. Join. (20)

Rnd 3:  ch2, (1dc, 2dc in next stitch) 10 times. Join. (30)

Rnd 4:  ch2, (2dc, 2dc in next stitch) 10 times. Join. (40)

*After Row 4 measure for gauge. Diameter should be 4 inches. (See Photo 1)

Rnd 5:  ch2, (3dc, 2dc in next stitch) 10 times. Join. (50)

Rnd 6-9:  ch2, 1dc in each stitch. Join. (50) Continue to brim instructions for Style #1 (Wide Brim). For Style #2 (Narrow Brim) continue to Round 10.

Rnd 10: [for Style #2 (Narrow Brim) only], ch2, 1dc in each stitch. Join. (50) Continue to brim instructions for Style #2 (Narrow Brim).

Brim Style #1 (Wide Brim): (use smaller size hook)

With the right side of the hat facing you, and using the smaller size hook, (if using a different color yarn, attach in the First stitch of the last row of the hat). Ch 10. (See Photo B.)

Row 1: Starting in 2nd chain from hook, 1sc in each chain. Work 1 sl st in each of the first 2 stitches of the hat (See Photo A). Do not chain 1, turn.

Row 2: Skip the 2 sl st’s, working in back loops only, 1sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Working in back loops only, 1sc in each sc across. Work 1 sl st in each of the next 2 stitches of the hat. Do not chain 1, turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 around, (you will end on a row 2). Continue to instructions for closing the seam.

Brim Style #2 (Narrow Brim): (use smaller size hook)

With the right side of the hat facing you, and using the smaller size hook, (if using a different color yarn, attach in the First stitch of the last row of the hat). Ch 7.

Closing the Seam:

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail and use a darning needle to sew the seam closed.

OR

I like to close the seam by working a row of slip stitches:

Turn the hat inside out. Hold the 2 edges of the ribbing together. Ch1. Work sl st’s across, going through the bottom of the beginning chain, and the back loops of the last row of ribbing. (See Photo C.) To me, this best mimics the look of the ribbing without an obvious seam. But feel free to close the seam however works best for you.

Sew in all yarn ends. And you’re done!

Finishing Touches (optional):

  • Add a yarn or faux fur Pom-Pom (or 2!)
  • Add a Faux leather tag
  • Add an applique
