Skill Level: easy

Size: newborn

Materials Used:

  • Size 3, Sport Weight yarn
  • Crochet hook, size F (3.75mm) *or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Darning needle
  • Measuring tape/ruler
  • Scissors

Gauge:

For this pattern I find it’s easier to make the first 3 rows then measure to determine the correct hook size needed. *See pattern for measurements.

Abbreviations Used (American Terminology):

sl st = slip stitch

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

If you are new at reading crochet patterns, here is a great tutorial by the Craft Yarn Council that I highly recommend.

Notes:

  1. When you see ( ), everything in the parentheses should be worked as a set. For example, (1sc, 1dc) 2X, means, “sc, dc, sc, dc”.
  2. When you see a number followed by a stitch, that stitch needs to be worked over that number of stitches. For example, “5sc” means 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches.
  3. JoinAt the end of each row join with a slip stitch to the first stitch of that row (NOT the beginning chain stitch) to complete the row.
  4. The number in parentheses at the end of each row indicates the total stitch count for that row when completed.
  5. The beginning chain(s) of each row DO NOT count as a stitch.

Pattern:

Rnd 1:  10hdc in a Magic Ring. {OR, if you don’t want to use a magic ring, ch 2, work 10hdc in first ch.} Join (see note #3). (10)

Rnd 2:  ch1, 2hdc in each stitch. Join. (20)

Row 3:  ch1, (4hdc, 2hdc in next stitch) 4x. Join. (24)

*After row 3 measure for gauge: It should measure 1.75 inches in diameter. (See Photo 1.)

Rows 4-10:  Ch 1, 1hdc in each stitch. Join. (24) Do not cut yarn. Continue to Ribbed Cuff.

*After row 10 it should measure 2.5 inches tall, and 2.25 inches wide. (See Photo 2.)

Ribbed Cuff:

Ch15.

Row 1: Starting in 2nd chain from hook, 1sc in each chain (14 sc’s total). Work 1 sl st in each of the first 2 stitches of the mitten. (See Photo 3.) Do not chain 1, turn.

Row 2: Skip the 2 sl st’s, working in back loops only, 1sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Working in back loops only, 1sc in each sc across. Work 1 sl st in each of the next 2 stitches of the mitten. Do not chain 1, turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 3, (ending on a row 2) Do not cut yarn. Continue to instructions for Closing the Seam.

Closing the Seam:

Cut the yarn leaving a long tail, and use a darning needle to sew the seam closed.

OR

I like to close the seam by working a row of slip stitches:

Turn the mitten inside out. Hold the 2 edges of the ribbing with right sides together. Ch1. Work sl st’s across, going through the bottom of the beginning chain first, and then the back loops of the last row of ribbing (loops furthest away from you). (See photo 4.) To me, this best mimics the look of the ribbing without an obvious seam. But feel free to close the seam however works best for you. (See Photo 5.)

Cut yarn. Sew in yarn ends. Turn the mitten right side out. Fold over the cuff.

Optional Tie:

Ch 65. Weave the tie through the last row of the mitten just above the cuff. I like to go in and out between every other stitch. Sew in the yarn ends. Tie in a bow. (See Photos 6 and 7.)

Congratulations, you have just made a pair of cozy mittens for a newborn baby! This pattern is perfect for beginners, and you can easily customize it by choosing different colors of yarn or adding embellishments like buttons or bows.
