You know what’s super important, no matter if you’re a crochet newbie or a pro? Yup, having the perfect crochet tools in your stash! Having the right gear in your crochet arsenal can make all the difference between a project that’s meh and one that’s totally kick-butt. So, let’s talk about what you need to crochet like a superstar! 🧶💪
First things first, having the right crochet tools is like having a secret weapon. It’s like being a superhero with the perfect gadgets, but instead of a cape, you’ve got your trusty crochet gear! Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been hooking for years, having the right stuff makes your crocheting journey way smoother.
And let’s not forget about the joy factor. Crocheting is supposed to be fun, right? Well, imagine having to wrestle with crappy tools every time you pick up your yarn. Not so fun, huh? But with the right crochet goodies, it’s like a party for your hands! Comfy hooks, smooth needles, and perfect yarn snippers – it’s like a little slice of crochet heaven.
So, whether you’re just dipping your toes into the world of crochet or you’re a seasoned pro, remember this: Your crochet toolbox is your best friend. It’s the secret sauce that turns your yarn into works of art. So, go ahead, treat yourself to the good stuff, and get ready to crochet like a boss! 🌟🧶💃

#1 – Crochet Hooks
- You can’t crochet without Hooks! (Well, there is such a thing as finger crochet, but that’s a post for another time.)
- There are endless types & styles of crochet hooks these days. From aluminum, to plastic, to bamboo! I prefer these Boye hooks.
- They are sturdy yet lightweight and last for years! Some of my Boye hooks I’ve had for almost 40 years! I use them with all types of yarn blends & weights.
- I love the smoothness of the aluminum which makes for consistent, even crochet stitches.
#2 – Scissors
-
-
- Good scissors are a must!! When I first learned to crochet as a child I used my little school scissors to cut my yarn. I remember getting SO frustrated!
- These scissors by Fiskars are by far my favorite! They are super sharp!
- The beveled and pointed tip makes it easy to trim yarn close to the project for a neat finish.
- Every crocheter should invest in a good pair of scissors!

#3 – Stitch Markers
-
-
- For years I didn’t use “real” stitch markers. I used a scrap piece of yarn, (and still do in a pinch), or safety pins.
- About 5 years ago I bought a set of actual stitch markers and it was a game changer for me! I use these.
- The best feature is they can lock in place. It’s very frustrating to have a stitch marker fall out!
- This set includes two different sizes.

#4 – Darning Needles
#5 – (Last but not least) YARN!
-
-
- For me, yarn is an addiction! Some people have their shoes, or purses…. I have my Yarn!
- Walking down the yarn isles at the craft store, or at a yarn shop is my Happy Place! Wool blends, super soft acrylic, cotton, alpaca, cashmere….. OH MY!
- The important thing is to pick the right yarn for the project. Learn how to read yarn labels so you can set yourself up for a successful crochet experience!
- My favorite go-to yarns are, I Love This Yarn and Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek, both from Hobby Lobby. And, both are very affordable.
-
Can you crochet with just a hook and a bit of yarn? Absolutely! But I highly recommend you build up your crochet “tool kit” with these useful items.
**Bonus Item #1** – Crocheted Hook Case
- If you’re looking for a new crochet project consider making yourself this crochet hook case.
-
- It’s a fantastic pattern! I never leave home without mine!
-
**Bonus Item #2** – Travel Bag
- I seriously never leave home without this travel bag!
- It holds everything I need to crochet on-the-go. It has tons of pockets, a zippered pouch, and hook holders. It also makes a perfect gift!
