Easy Baby Beanie Crochet Pattern

After spending years perfecting this Baby Beanie Crochet Pattern, I’m super excited to share it with all of you!

When it comes to making this top-down beanie, I’ve discovered that using half double crochet stitches gives it just the right amount of stretch for that perfect fit.

This pattern includes two unique styles, solid color & stripes.

And here’s the fun part – you can totally jazz up this simple beanie with appliques, pom-poms, buttons, or whatever strikes your fancy. The possibilities are endless! (Check out the pics below for some inspo.)”

Materials Used:
Worsted weight yarn (4), (I prefer I Love This Yarn, from Hobby Lobby.)
Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook

Optional: pom pom
Optional: applique

Top 5 Crochet tools I use everyday.

Gauge:
14hdc x 10 rows = 4” x 4”
~~Gauge is important! Please make a test swatch and adjust your hook size accordingly.

~~Alternatively, you can make the first 5 rounds then measure for gauge. See pattern below for measurements.

Striped Version:
For the striped version I use 2 colors, a Main Color, and White. Color changes are listed in the pattern. (Pictures are included for visual reference.)

Abbreviations Used:
ch = chain
ss = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
MR = magic ring
fpdc = front post double crochet (tutorial link below)
bpdc = back post double crochet (tutorial link below)

Notes:

  1. When you see ( ), everything in the parentheses should be worked as a set. For example, (1sc, 1dc) 2X, means, “sc, dc, sc, dc”.
  2. When you see a number followed by a stitch, that stitch needs to be worked over that number of stitches. For example, “5sc” means 1 sc in each of the next 5 stitches.
  3. At the end of each row join with a slip stitch to the first stitch (NOT the chain 1) of that row to complete the row.
  4. The number in parentheses at the end of each row indicates the total stitch count for that row when completed.
  5. The chain 1 at the beginning of the row DOES NOT count as a stitch.

  1. Thank you for a super simple pattern. As someone self taught, while on lock down, it’s great to be able to produce a finished item that actually looks like it’s meant to.

  2. Love the bootees and the hat I’m definitely going to crochet them. Thank you for sharing your
    patterns 💜

    1. Hi. I’m trying to do gauge swatch and am up to hook size k and can only get 3 inches wide for 9 hdcs 8 rows will get
      My 4 high. I crochet loose Why can’t I get 4×4 for 9 hdcs and 10 rows

  3. Your patterns are so easy to read and I will print one or two thank you for explaining I detail . I’ve just started crocheting again after years .

  4. I don’t understand the instructions (2hdc,2hdc in next stitch)9X. If I do this it doesn’t add up to the number of stitches.
    Others don’t seem to have this problem.

    1. Hi Rose! On Rnd 4 the instructions are (2hdc, 2hdc in the next stitch) 9X. Ok, let’s break this down. The first part is, 2hdc — this means work 1hdc in each of the next 2 stitches. The second part is, 2hdc in the next stitch — this is exactly what it says, work 2hdc in the next stitch. (This is a basic increase.)

      Ok, let’s add that together. (1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc in the next stitch) = 4hdc total. Do this 9 times. 4 x 9 = 36 stitches total.

      Then on Rnd 5 we will be increasing again. (3hdc, 2hdc in the next stitch) 9x. That means, (1hdc + 1hdc + 1hdc + 2hdc in the next stitch) = 5hdc total. 5 x 9 = 45 stitches total.

      I hope that clears it up. If not please let me know. I’m always happy to help! 🙂

  5. Would be more clear to say 1hdc next 2 sts, 2 Hdc in next stitch. I figured it out, at least to the point that it worked. The picture of the hat looked like it was all double crochet.
    Thanks for the information anyway. I had just never seen instructions written like that.
    Enjoy your patterns.
